Tim in the spare room
Our spare room is quite small (as you can see), and we keep it sparse. The light is lovely in there. It's respected as a quiet space ~ if we're both in there reading or thinking or drinking tea, there won't be any talking. I really love this room. I love the idea of it ~ to bring silence and thought into daily life, to stop and be observant, and to be with someone (myself or Tim) without putting it all into words. A lot can happen in silence.
Right now I'm sipping pink tea from a polka-dotted cup in front of a deep orange fire with a newly thrifted cobalt-blue wool blanket over my knees. Mimi's next to me balancing on a pillow and pretending she's not trying to get onto my lap. This afternoon I popped an audiobook into my car and drove off intent on visiting a local museum at which I never arrived, getting distracted at thrift shops along the way and finally turning for home at 5 pm, car laden with treasures. I snagged a perfect-condition golden-upholstered yellow rocking chair for $7 ~ it has very smooth worn wooden arms which the previous owners must have worn off during hours of rocking. I love furniture with history.
Thrifting is the biggest and best treasure hunt. I feel like a little kid every time.
Have you found any treasures lately?

I love the Narnia reference :) I found a cute little peter rabbit tea cup and a bittersweet red over blouse. I love the rocking chair!
Yes! I agree, Brooke, thrifting is the best adult treasure hunt. I've picked up some small dishes and pillowcases recently. . . and a 1950s black with white fur neck muff wool winter coat. I'm not usually interested in fur, but I'm sorry, this is gorgeously crafted. Beautiful buttons too.
LOVE this sacred space!
Yes, fellow thrifters! I just love finding these well-crafted items with so much quality or whimsy or history. :)
Keia ~ "bittersweet red" sounds so luscious. I can see wearing it with turquoise earrings or ring. :)
Jill ~ I too love those old patterns on pillowcases and sheets. The girls over at 3191 often have beautiful ones in their photos. And buttons...I love buttons. I don't even do much with them but I have a passel of them from my mom, who collects them (keeps 'em in Ball jars.) The coat sounds like a find. :) Your probably look like a million bucks in it!
Alfie ~ thanks!
oh, good for you that you never made it to the museum. it will always be there for you when you are ready :) good thing you kept to your route there and ended up with some good finds. what audio book were you listening to in the car??
ooooo! turquoise definitely!
Brooke....I just love this idea of the spare room where silence reigns. What more can be said....silence does yield amazing surprises! Enjoy!
Jenna ~ well, I was listening to a murder mystery set in medieval times, (a la Ellis Peter's Brother Cadfael) that I wouldn't recommend to you, but it was entertaining. It was called Mistress of Death. She's a medieval doctor from Salerno. You know. I like to give new books a try, otherwise I spend all my time listening to Agatha Christies.
Keia ~ :) I think turquoise goes with everything.
Patti ~ thanks! :)
Ah, very sweet post. I need some quiet moments...and a awesome full day of thrifting like you had. I will plan these in the near future :)
Hi Van, it was an amazing and much-needed day! I hope you enjoy one soon. :)
I used to have a house with a reading nook. I kept that room sparse too and loved the opportunity it gave me to sit in silence and contemplate things. The light in your room is lovely. Love the sound of the rocking chair!
Kerri ~ I love the word "sparse" ~ it conjures up delightful meanings to me. And "reading nook" too. My ideal reading nook would be in a big ol' room with lots of sunshine and walls lined with books: two comfy velvet couches would face each other and I could just lounge and read and look at the willow out the window. And since this is just a dream, maybe a miniature horse could peek his head in...
One day I'd love a room like that. With or without the horse.
Wait, I guess that wouldn't be a nook, then?
