At home, mix 2 cups whole wheat and white flours, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 4 teaspoons baking powder and half a teaspoon salt, then chop in one half cup of butter till fine. Pop into a container. In a small jar, add 1 egg to slightly less than 1 cup milk, and put the lid on. Bring these things camping.

On your campsite table, add wet mixture to dry. Don't overmix.

Spoon into preheated dutch oven and bake until browned.


(If you want to make these and you aren't camping, spoon them in dollops onto a buttered cookie sheet and bake 12-15 minutes at 450* F)

I don't! I tend to just do things like hot dogs and potatoes or veggies in foil. Though I feel like I might have bought a camping cookbook one year, feeling all inspired at the time. (In which case, I wonder where I put it.)

I want a dutch oven for camping now.

dutch ovens are fuuuun. ") we do foil wraps too, which always turn out so deliciously. our secret is to bring cheese and crackers to munch on while we wait for them to cook: and tim double wraps them so they don't burn...

i will have to try these. they look delicious. :)
once, i threw together a baked oatmeal with fruit and maple syrup at home. i put it in one of those aluminum pans. then i just heated it up in the mini grill. it actually turned out pretty well! :)

wow, those look great! the hubs and I always like to do a pot of broccoli over the fire ( I know, sounds kind of weird) but it tastes fantastic! just take a pot, fill about 1/2 in water, fill with broccoli and spray with olive oil spray, sprinkle with salt and pepper, cover and steam for about 7 min.

Brittany ~ you're onto something with the "prepare at home" idea. We've started doing more of that ~ so much easier and less mess (and fewer bears on my mind)

Keia ~ so delicious! it's been a while ~ it is surprisingly easy to steam veggies over the fire. we bring our cast iron pan too and saute onions and potatoes and things. yum!

Yum! I'm going to try these on my trip this summer. I just might have to invest in a dutch oven too. We have a nice camp stove but I think we could really cook up some good stuff with the oven.

do you think these biscuits would turn out in a cast iron combo cooker??

Alfie ~ sorry it took me so long to get back to you~ my answer to that is, why not give it a try? Keep an eye on it and adjust things if they seem to be cooking too quickly. I've burnt the bottoms on these and they still taste great once that is scraped off. I think the recipe can take a beating. :)
