camping with impending rain
On the drive to the campground we followed a winding detour through wooded hills and pulled up short behind a car stopped in the road. We thought they were watching something and sure enough, over in the field next to us was a fox peering from the undergrowth ~ he walked out and moments later was followed by two lush kits who frolicked for ages on the grass, frisky as puppies. I've never seen fox kits so close for so long. The father had an atrophied leg which he held up but he was quite athletic and seemed unhampered by it. He had raised two healthy kits bursting with life.
We had such a fine camping anniversary and thank you so much for your comments and responses to our wedding photos! I had been wanting to share that day here but was waiting for the right time.

I have never seen real foxes, but one time a badger, it was huge!
Is that salamander real? It's awesome!!
I have never seen a badger ~ that would ba amazing! I've seen bear which is pretty great, though. I thought it was a salamander but it is a red-spotted newt. :) We saw 5 of them, gorgeous!
Wow, that sounds like such a surreal experience! I would have thought they were forest spirits or something. I saw a badger once when I was in high school, it was climbing up a tree and I looked it in the eye and turned around and then when I looked back it was gone. The only other person to see it was my sister. We also saw a black bear running across the highway on our road trip when we were passing through pennsylvania. It was so random.
i love these pictures--such peace. i like your banner, by the way.
to start- LOVE the new banner.
to finish- can't begin to tell you how fabulous i think your fox encounter was. i've been so enamored with the creatures ever since i spotted one at my secluded woodsy spot. to observe them is magic. i think mary oliver said it best in "october" when she ponders how a fox glided down a hill and did not notice her. she muses: "so this is the world. i'm not in it. it is beautiful."
so perfect. glad you enjoyed your camping getaway.
i felt the coolness of the air in all these photos. the fox - pretty darn awesome!!!
Oddly enough, even though we live outside of philadelphia, there is a large fox population around here! I see them loping across fields and roads often enough to not feel starved for the sight of them.
there is also a mary oliver poem in "swan" about a fox ~
"Did you stop the car?
No, I kept going to wherever it was I was going,
which I don't remember.
Well, what do you remember?
The fox! the fox!"
this leaves my heart aflutter ~ i can smell the purity of the air.
