the year is in infancy

I took a lot of self-portraits this year.

A lot happened over the past 12 months. I wonder if each year of my life will be so packed with experiences, but it does seem that this happens every year. Aging brings towers of change and ripening. Some of the pictures were of me just before or after things happened. Looking back with the crystal clarity of hindsight was like looking like a documentary I didn't even know I was making.

But I am happy to be here where I am. I don't rue any of it. I'm excited for what's to come, thankful for what has passed.

Last night I stayed in, built up the fire, and opened the door at midnight to let the old year mingle with the new. There was a tiny shock of sadness just at 12:01 when I felt separated from the old year, now gone forever, and pushed into the new.

But I think it'll be a good fit.

These are wonderful portraits. What a great idea, being able to look at yourself over the course of the year and see how things change you. I've always liked looking at those picture series that people take of themselves or their kids every year... but I'm not sure that I've come to terms enough with aging to be able to handle it for myself. :)

Wishing you a wonderful 2012.

Such beautiful thoughtfulness in this post. I especially like "...and opened the door at midnight to let the old year mingle with the new." Cheers.

You're so brave staying up until midnight! We fell asleep at 11:20 - haha!

Knowing what little I know about your journey right now, I'd say that this new year will be just as packed with rich experiences!

I love that--hindsight like a documentary--It's so true. When I look on this past year's pictures, I think wow, we've done so much, we haaave so much---in goodness, in family, in love, in friendships, and this is why time flies, and this is how we grow so much, even if we don't realize it. Looking back is the only way we know how far we've come. Happy New year Brooke! oh and I love your self portraits!

Isn't it brilliant and wild how certain snap-shot seconds become categorized as "before" or "after" when at the time they were just that. A quick snap.

Age is so fascinating.
