My poppop and I have been writing letters back and forth for a while now (he's 91) and I asked him about some of the trips he and gramom Elly had done. True to form, he sent me a photo album in the mail. This is one of my favorite pictures that he took of gramom, in california looking over the big sur coast.
Tim and I fly into southern california next month for a week's adventure before the baby arrives. We have so much going on nowadays that it's fun to have that time to look forward to, knowing that we can just take a clean break for a little bit and get a breather. As of yet we have no plans. Do you have any recommendations for camping or parks to visit in the south there? Tim would really like to visit san diego and we know nothing about the area. I'd love to know some of the special spots.

I love California. My good friend lives in Chula Vista which is south of San Diego and right on the Mexican border. I went to San Diego for the day and enjoyed it. I went to a lovely cactus park which I'll try and find out where for you,
I used to love writing letters to my Grandparents. It was always so enjoyable when they would write back. How nice to get a photo album in the mail. x
i'd say joshua tree (if you are into dessert) only few sites take reservations. tho if you are there mid week it's not a problem. one of the best LA state beaches is el matador (a cove beach north of malibu - tho no camping). re. san diego. if you are driving highway one cabrillo is nice with a great view of the whole area and has good tide pools. have not been been down there much lately i find it to be too much traffic. ironic. i know :) oh, and there is also anza borrego (near SD) again, dessert camping, if you are into that.
If you find yourself in L.A... I highly recommend stopping by the Museum of Jurassic Technology.
Oh, I love San Diego. I have an aunt and cousins that live there and we went a few years ago with the kids. It was so much fun to re-visit some of the places I remember from my childhood. I would recommend watching the hang gliders at Torrey Pines (I think that's a state park and you may be able to camp there on the cliffs?) and having a picnic at Mission Beach (the quintessential San Diego beach area, nice walk along the bay). The view from Mt. Soledad is gorgeous also. Old Town San Diego has undergone a little bit of a revitalization in recent years as well, worth a visit. Of course the zoo is unrivaled, and I love the beaches at Coronado and La Jolla also. Have a wonderful time!
I grew up in SD - one of my favorite places! I love Balboa Park (built for World Fair, nice architecture, museums, gardens, buskers, pleasant place for picnics). There is a cactus garden there, maybe that's what the other commenter referred to? Coronado Beach is one of my favorite beaches. La Jolla has tidepools and a sea lion colony - a lot of people also swim there.
Joshua Tree is indeed beautiful, but about 3 hrs drive from SD - so fun to go bouldering there (or climbing if you have the gear). Anza Borrego is also nice - there are mud caves that are gorgeous and really fun to explore (made completely of mud, they change with each rainstorm), although I'm not really sure how to describe how to get to them (You need to go off-roading an hour or so to find them). Maybe Google? Have a wonderful time!
oh, and we really enjoyed camping at Mt Laguna a few years ago. :)
I would check out Joshua Tree. Have fun on your trip!
I love that pic that your poppop took and I love that you call him that :) I called mine paw paw. I miss him so much.
I love Torrey Pines, myself. I don't know if you can camp there, but it is a beautiful place to hike in.
